Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge protects more than 25,650 acres of wetlands, forests, open water, and rare plant habitat along Umbagog Lake on the New Hampshire–Maine border. Centered on the largest lake along that border, its shallow waters help sustain extensive marshes and wetland complexes, including Harper's Meadow and the Floating Island National Natural Landmark. Set where boreal and deciduous forests meet, the refuge supports exceptional wildlife diversity, especially birds, with 229 species observed and 137 breeding there. It also played an important role in New Hampshire’s bald eagle recovery, when eagles nested successfully on Umbagog Lake in 1989 for the first time in the state since 1949.
