Atalaya Mountain is a peak in northern New Mexico in the Santa Fe National Forest, within the Santa Fe Mountains of the Sangre de Cristo Range in the Southern Rocky Mountains. It is a major part of the eastern skyline of Santa Fe because no higher peaks stand between the city and the mountain to the east. Seen from Santa Fe between Sun Mountain and Picacho Peak, with Thompson Peak behind it, Atalaya is a distinctive feature of the local landscape. It is also a popular hiking destination, most directly reached by the Atalaya Trail or by way of the Dale Ball Trails near Picacho Peak.
