July 5-9, 1864, Johnston Army of Tenn. [CS] held a fortified line north of the Chattahoochee from Nickajack Creek to one mile above Peachtree Creek. Federal crossings several miles upriver on July 8 made the line untenable, and Johnston crossed his forces on July 9 to this side on five bridges: a traffic bridge here, the State R.R. bridge, and three pontoon bridges downstream. Until Federal movements from the upriver crossing to the Peachtree Creek valley became evident, Johnston’s forces marked time here until the 18th, when they were placed in the outer defense line of Atlanta north and east of the city.
