Stone House, an abandoned two-story structure in Portland’s Forest Park, began as a public shelter designed in 1929 by architect Ernest F. Tucker for restroom, pavilion, and storage use and was completed during 1935 and 1936. After the Columbus Day Storm of 1962 destroyed its water line, repairs were not funded, and the building was left behind. Known also as the Macleay Park Shelter and widely nicknamed the Witch’s Castle or Witches Castle, it gradually became a ruin-like curiosity shaped by graffiti, mossy stone walls, and local lore. Today it is remembered as both a hiking landmark and one of Portland’s enduring eerie attractions.
