Portland Japanese Garden is a 12.5-acre cultural garden in Washington Park created in the postwar era as a gesture of friendship between Portland and Japan. Opened in 1967 on former zoo grounds, it was designed by Professor Takuma Tono as a sequence of distinct garden spaces rather than a single style, including the Flat, Natural, Sand and Stone, Strolling Pond, and Tea gardens. Expanded in 2017, it has grown into a major public attraction and cultural institution, with year-round access, exhibitions, festivals, and the Japan Institute. Its landscape and gifts from Japanese cities reflect a long history of civic and diplomatic exchange.
