White Butte, in Slope County in southwestern North Dakota, is the state’s highest natural point at 3,506 feet, standing in the Badlands amid a landscape better known for plains than mountains. Its summit lies within the Little Missouri National Grassland, though the butte itself is privately owned by the Dennis family, who allow visitor access. Remote and lightly developed, it is reached by a usual 4-mile round trip trail, with parking about a mile from the trailhead. White Butte’s prominence and elevation, exceeding the nearby Killdeer Mountains, have made it North Dakota’s best-known state high point and a notable hiking destination.
