Founded by Irene Lewis in the early 1960s and opened on June 23, 1967, the Lomita Railroad Museum preserves California railroad history in an unusual neighborhood setting. Its main building is a replica of Greenwood Station, a 19th-century Boston & Maine depot once located in Wakefield, Massachusetts, and a full-size replica water tower reinforces the period atmosphere. The site combines indoor exhibits of models, photographs, and train paintings with outdoor rolling stock, including a 1901 Baldwin steam locomotive, a Southern Pacific whaleback tender, and a 1910 Union Pacific caboose. Over time, it has also served as a small public park and community landmark.
