Muskegon State Park occupies 1,233 acres between Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake, with shoreline on both waters that gives it an unusual setting. Established in 1923 on land that had been part of the Ryerson Hill and Company lumber mill site at Snug Harbor, it reflects the area's transition from the lumber era to public recreation. New Deal programs shaped much of the park in the 1930s, as the Civilian Conservation Corps built roads, planted trees, cleared campsites, and erected a scenic blockhouse later replaced by a replica, while the Works Progress Administration improved the beaches and scenic drive. The park now supports year-round recreation, including hiking, camping, winter sports, and a luge track.
