This large protected landscape in northwestern Nevada combines the Black Rock Desert, High Rock Canyon, historic emigrant routes, and ten wilderness areas within one federally protected area. Created in 2000 and managed by the Bureau of Land Management, it preserves both striking desert landforms and habitats and the historic travel corridors that crossed this remote country. Its management balances conservation with public access through low-impact recreation, encouraging walking and hiking while limiting motorized use to certain trails and playas and excluding it from wilderness areas. The region is significant as one of Nevada’s major protected desert landscapes and as part of the history of western migration.
