Trego Hot Springs in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert is both a long-used water source and the remnant of a small railroad stop on the Western Pacific Railroad. Known by several earlier names, the springs were used long before the railroad era, and the surrounding area saw seasonal occupation between about 4000 and 1000 years before present. In 1856 emigrants were directed to the springs, and by 1857 the route passed by them. A trench-like soaking ditch about 400 feet long was hand-dug in 1860 to cool the hot water. In the 20th century Trego became tied to railroad settlement, desert bathing, and later Black Rock Desert art culture, though bathing warnings were issued in 2020 after contamination was reported.
