Charter Oak Schoolhouse in Schuline, Illinois, is a rare one-room octagonal school built in 1873, the third public school on that site after an 1848 log building and an 1863 frame school destroyed by a tornado. Contractor William H. Holcomb built it for $1,000, using an eight-sided plan proposed by teacher Daniel Bishop Ling to admit more light and better resist severe winds. Set on limestone with red brick walls, it also served as a community gathering place while operating as a public primary school until 1953. One of only 53 octagonal schoolhouses built in the United States, and one of just three still standing, it was restored as a museum and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
