The First Wilderness Corridor follows the Upper Hudson from Saratoga Springs to North Creek through rapids, marble cliffs, and ice meadows along land that served as a hunting ground for Indian people, who established trails linking the Mohawk and Champlain valleys. American and European soldiers followed these trails during the French and Indian War, and after the fighting ended, vast timber tracts spurred logging and tanning. Construction of a railroad just after the Civil War brought vacationers to hotels and resorts, and communities along the route now celebrate their shared history into the Adirondack wilderness. On the Hudson at the foothills of the Adirondacks, Lake Luzerne stands near Rockwell Falls, where water from Lake Luzerne joins the river, and near Phelps Bay, where the Hudson and Sacandaga rivers meet. These waterways were used by Mohawk, Abenaki, and Iroquois Indians traveling between what is now known as Johnstown and Lake George. Early settlement at Lake Luzerne included grist mills, saw mills, a creamery and cheese factory, a distillery, and a shirt factory, while leather became its biggest business during the last half of the nineteenth century. The first pulp mill in the United States using American-made equipment was built at the outlet of Lake Luzerne and still stands with some original machinery as a public museum, together with an iron ore smelter, a gristmill, and sawmill in Mill Park. Adirondack Folk School teaches the arts, crafts, and culture of the Adirondack region on Main Street. Loggers ran river drives until the 1930s, when old logging camps found new life as dude ranches, beginning with Northwoods Dude Ranch, and today Painted Pony Ranch remains a historic vacation spot and home of championship rodeos while nearby stables still offer horseback riding. Although the Hudson River marks the boundary between Warren and Saratoga Counties, and Lake Luzerne and Hadley, residents and visitors alike find this little valley a place to ride, raft, and rest.
