U.S. troops encamped near Cheyenne Agency during an Indian uprising in 1874. A site southwest of the agency was selected by Agt. J.D. Miles and Capt T. Wint, established as a permanent post in July, 1875, and named for Gen. Jesse L. Reno, who died in action in the Battle of Antietam in 1862. The post was abandoned on Feb. 24, 1908, and the reserve served as a U.S. remount station until 1949.
