Two Civil War cannons were retrofitted to their original condition through arrangements made by Howard D. Blankenship in a project that began in 1977 and was completed in 1984. The northern piece was manufactured by N.P. Ames Foundry in Springfield, Mass., in 1844 and was used during the Mexican and Civil Wars. The southern piece was cast from church bells, wedding rings, and many other items at a foundry in Nashville, Tenn., and was captured by northern troops at the Battle of Droop Mountain in Pocahontas County on Nov. 6, 1863.
