Brigadier General Horatio P. Van Cleve's division of Crittenden's Corps, with Brigadier General Samuel Beatty's 1st Brigade, Colonel George F. Dick's 2nd Brigade, and Colonel Sidney M. Barnes's 3rd Brigade, camped at Crawfish Springs on September 15th, 1863, where with Palmer's Division it guarded the line of the Chickamauga until noon of the 18th, when it was sent to occupy this position. At 1 p.m. on the 19th it was dispatched to the left by the Lafayette Road and soon after went into action east of Brotherton's.
