Brigadier General Samuel Beatty's Brigade of Van Cleve's Division, Crittenden's Corps, including the 79th Indiana under Colonel Frederick Kneffler, 9th Kentucky under Colonel George H. Cram, 17th Kentucky under Colonel Alexander M. Stout, 19th Ohio under Lieutenant Colonel Henry G. Stratton, and 26th Pennsylvania Battery under Captain Alanson J. Stevens, arrived on this ground from Crawfish Springs on September 18, 1863, and formed on the left of Wood's Division, where it remained until 1 p.m. on September 19. At that hour it received orders to march at double quick to support General Palmer's Division, then heavily engaged with the enemy near Brotherton's. It moved at once by the Lafayette Road and went into action on Palmer's right about 1:30 p.m.
