The Escalante Route is a South Rim Grand Canyon hiking route in Arizona that follows the Colorado River between Tanner Rapids and Hance Rapids, passing Escalante Creek and part of the canyon’s lower river corridor. Classified as a “route” rather than a maintained trail, it receives the lowest level of upkeep and is essentially unmaintained. Its best-known challenge is the Papago Wall, a 30-foot cliff near Hance Rapids that hikers must climb, and the National Park Service advises carrying a rope for backpacks there. Additional short climbing sections occur in 75 Mile Canyon, with some avoidable and some marked by cairns.
