Nestor Chylak, 1922–1982, was a native of Olyphant and a graduate of Olyphant High School who attended St. Thomas University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 and was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart for action during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. He was a respected American League umpire for 25 years, umpiring 5 World Series, 5 All Star games, and 3 American League Championship Series. From 1979 through 1981, he served as an assistant supervisor of American League umpires. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., on July 25, 1999.
