In 1871, Ross Township in Jefferson County, Ohio, honored its fallen soldiers from the War of 1861 to 65 by naming men from the township who served in units including the 2nd, 32nd, 52nd, 122nd, and 178th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, the 8th Iowa Cavalry, and the 1st Tennessee Battery, and who were killed or died between 1862 and 1865. Among them were Thomas George, son of Robert and Martha George, killed at Perryville, Kentucky, on October 8, 1862; Thos. Duke and Jehu Duke, both dead on August 27, 1864; Jas. Dorrance; Robert McClave; Boston Geren; Elbridge Geren; David Potts; Jos. Russell; John Porter; David Call; Isaiah Call; J. Kirkpatrick; Alfred Walters; Samuel F. McLain; Ed. Craley; G. W. Craley; John Stewart, who died in PR. in 1864; Aaron Scamp; David Kriner; Jacob Kriner; Enos Kriner; H. K. Crabs; Adam Saner; Stanley Shane; Netwon Wycoff; Wm. Rex, who died in PR. in August 1864; Benjamin Rex; Ross Coyle; and Edward Goodlin. One veteran listed, Thos. B. Starn of the 32nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, died on November 2, 1885. A bronze plaque added in 1985 was dedicated to Robert George, born in 1744 in Antrim, Ireland, who died in 1819 in Mooretown, Ohio, served in the Revolutionary War in the Seventh Pennsylvania Regiment, and lived nearby in the stone house built in 1813.
