On July 26, 1863, Gen. John H. Morgan, in command of Confederate troops, passed through this village and proceeded northward by way of Circle Green and Nebo, now Bergholz, while being pursued by Gen. James M. Shackelford, commanding the 14th Illinois Cavalry, 1st Kentucky Cavalry, 9th Michigan Cavalry, 11th Michigan Battery, 86th Ohio Mounted Infantry, 2d Tennessee Mounted Infantry, and the Steubenville Militia.
