The Samuel W. Grinnell Post No. 283 received its charter from the Grand Army of the Republic on October 6, 1884, and operated until it was disbanded in 1934. Its members built this hall in 1898-99 and dedicated it in October 1899. The hall contains flags, medals, photographs, and other mementos of the Civil War and of Sunfield veterans of that war, as well as furniture, ritual equipment, and records of the post. In 1899 members planted three maple trees at the front of the property in memory of Generals Grant, Sheridan, and Sherman, and in 1900 the Grand Army of the Republic brought the two cannon beside the hall to Sunfield. Founded in 1866, the Grand Army of the Republic was a veterans association that assisted Union veterans and their widows and orphans. Since the hall's completion in 1899, it has been used by the Samuel W. Grinnell Post No. 283, Grand Army of the Republic; Woman’s Relief Corps No. 62; Samuel W. Grinnell Camp No. 17, Sons of Union Veterans, U.S.A.; Helen Edwins Tent No. 30, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War; and Curtenius Guard Camp No. 17, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. In 1987 the hall was owned by the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
