The Conestoga Navigation Co., incorporated in 1825, built nine locks and dams on Conestoga Creek from Lancaster to the Susquehanna River for slackwater navigation that operated for about forty years. A rock fill crib dam across the river enabled cargo exchanges with the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal on the west shore.
