Old St. Stephens Masonic Lodge No. 9 existed from 1821 to 1834, and its charter and early members were Gov. Israel Pickens, Col. Silas Dinsmore, Thomas Eastin, R. Chamberlain, Thomas Malone, J.F. Ross, Daniel Coleman, John Womack, W.D. Gaines, James Roberts, James K. Blount, Ptolemy Harris, F.S. Lyon, Micajah Brewer, and John F. McGrew. It was one of the nine lodges that organized the Grand Lodge of Alabama at Cahaba in 1821, though Masonry existed here as early as 1811. After the decline of Old St. Stephens, St. Stephens Lodge No. 81 was organized and chartered here in 1854, and its minutes have been kept and meetings held continuously at this site since the charter date.
