Old Winnsboro Cemetery
History
2
Old Winnsboro Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in East Texas. Its first burial, on an unknown date, was an accident victim. The earliest gravestone belongs to Andrew Vannoy (1812-58), co-owner with Dr. Joseph McGee of one of the first sawmills in the area. Also buried here are members of the Cook family, donors of the Winnsboro townsite who probably gave the land for the cemetery. Among the many important persons interred here are industrial leaders, three pioneer ministers, eight early-day doctors, a patriot who fought under Gen. George Custer, and veterans of the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World Wars I and II.
