Over 1,100 Clinton Countians served in the military during the Vietnam War. Among the county women in uniform were SP5 Mary Lee Motter, SP4 Patricia M. Powell, and SP5 Peggy A. Sheasley. CAPT Richard W. Day flew F-102 Delta Daggers over Vietnam with the 509th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. CPL Ronald K. Jones of the 7th Marines was wounded in action and awarded the Purple Heart. SP5 David B. Frantz earned a Purple Heart while serving as a combat medic with the 173rd Airborne. SSG Ernest L. Button served two tours in Vietnam with the 5th and 7th Special Forces Groups and earned a Bronze Star. CPL Danny L. Packer, 12th Cavalry (Airborne), was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action near An-Khe. PFC Larry K. Barner, 7th Cavalry, CPL Milford H. Wensel, 4th Cavalry, and other county men lost their lives.
