Machicomoco State Park is a six hundred forty-five-acre park in Gloucester County near Werewocomoco, the headquarters village of Chief Powhatan, and its Algonquian name means “special meeting place.” Archaeological evidence, including shell middens, shows Indigenous use as early as 2000 BC, and the park presents that deep Native history through exhibits focused on Virginia Indians and the Powhatan Confederacy. It also includes the Catlett Islands and Timberneck House, built in 1793 on land owned by the Catlett family. After failed private development plans, the Conservation Fund bought the property in 2017, allowing Virginia to establish the park, which was dedicated in April 2021 after a pandemic delay.
