Near Canton, Illinois, the Orendorf Site preserves four separate Middle Mississippian settlement areas and was one of seven major sites in the Spoon River tradition. As a regional center in Spoon River culture, it stood at the center of local political organization and important trade routes. Its unusual value lies in showing the same village in multiple relocated occupations, with artifacts spread across distinct areas rather than mixed in one place, allowing change over time to be traced more clearly. Connections by trade and migration to Cahokia reveal both wider Mississippian networks and a distinct local identity, making Orendorf one of the Canton area's key prehistoric sites.
