In August 1856, Abraham Lincoln stood on this spot in Kalamazoo and gave an anti-slavery address. The site was later associated with Civil War veterans through Sarah E. Fuller, Tent No. 8 of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Department of Michigan, in memory of Orcutt Post No. 79, Kalamazoo Department of Michigan, Grand Army of the Republic, the veterans of the Civil War.
