The Eric and Margaret Ann Brown House in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Parkwyn Village, a cooperative neighborhood founded in 1946 by the Browns and five other families. Construction began in 1950, and the family moved in the next year, remaining there for more than fifty years. Considered one of the best preserved examples of Wright’s Usonian work, the single-story house is built of concrete block on a wooded hillside lot overlooking Lorenz Lake, with clerestory windows along the street side and broad openings to the lake. Its importance also reflects Parkwyn Village’s mid-century experiment in cooperative community planning.
