Estivant Pines

Estivant Pines is a 508-acre nature sanctuary on Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula that preserves one of the state’s last old-growth eastern white pine stands. The forest narrowly escaped broader logging after changes in ownership and a campaign that enabled the Michigan Nature Association to begin acquiring land in 1973, with later additions bringing it near its present size. Some surviving pines, established after a fire around 1695, rise more than 125 feet and are more than 300 years old. The sanctuary also supports diverse bird and plant life, and its trails pass through a rare remnant of Michigan’s pre-logging forest.
