Isle Royale is an archipelago of more than 200 islands forty-five miles north of Keweenaw County. Its main island, the largest in Lake Superior, is forty-five miles long and nine miles wide, and Isle Royale has seventy lakes, including the largest, Siskiwit Lake. Rock formations of basaltic lava, sandstone, and conglomerate were formed millions of years ago. It is home to the largest herd of moose in the U.S., and many varieties of wild flowers grow there, including twenty-eight types of wild orchids, making it a wilderness paradise. Old copper pits of the aborigines, fur trading posts, and abandoned mines reflect a long search for copper there. Mining began in 1844. Isle Royale National Park was dedicated on August 27, 1946.
