On January 6, 2021, a mob of Donald Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol in an effort to stop Congress from counting Electoral College votes and formalizing Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory. Spurred by Trump’s false claims that the election had been stolen, thousands marched to the Capitol and hundreds broke in, assaulting police, forcing evacuations, and disrupting a central constitutional process. The violence caused deaths, injuries, and millions of dollars in damage. The attack brought impeachment, congressional investigation, and more than 1,400 federal charges, and it remains a contested but unmistakable attempt to block the lawful transfer of presidential power.
