The Old Spanish Trail consisted of four pack mule trading routes used mainly from 1829 to 1848, spanning about 2,700 miles across what was then northern Mexico. Trade centered on woven goods brought from Santa Fe, New Mexico, which were exchanged for horses and mules in Los Angeles, California. Travel along the trail declined by the late 1840s as new routes and later railroads provided alternatives. In this area, Salina Canyon, Sevier Valley, and Long Valley were prominent segments, and these historic routes remain major travel corridors except for Long Valley. The trail also carried a darker history: the enslavement and exchange of Native Americans, primarily women and children, for goods and forms of servitude had a devastating effect on tribes in the area.
