Fishlake National Forest in south-central Utah, named for Fish Lake, was formed in 1908 by merging Fish Lake and Glenwood National Forests and now spans about 1.5 million acres of mountains, plateaus, and headwaters. Its modern history includes the 1889 sale of Native water rights at Fish Lake to the Fremont Irrigation Company and the forest reserve created ten years later by President William McKinley. Among its best-known features are Pando, a vast quaking aspen clonal colony in the Fremont River Ranger District, the Chalk Creek Hieroglyphics, diverse wildlife, and the headwaters of Otter Creek.
