Originally a two story, L-shaped building, it was run by Mrs. Bridget Henderson as a boarding house before she sold it to Mrs. Ellen Dewan, when it became the Dewan Hotel. Her son, Jim Dewan, briefly operated Jim's Saloon along the side of the hotel. In 1935, Rex and Agnes Alexander dismantled the building and built the Smartsville Grocery Store, reusing the original materials. After being closed for a decade, the store reopened in 2013 under Jacob and Alyson Shortridge as J-n-A Country Store.
