During the advance of Sherman's forces south from Resaca on May 16-17, 1864, the U.S. 4th Corps, followed by the 14th Corps, marched by this and nearby roads in pursuit of Johnston's forces, which had evacuated Resaca the night before. Newton's Division, leading the U.S. 4th Corps, was aligned across the road, with its right on a hill to the west. A spirited rear-guard action followed, in which Francis T. Sherman's Brigade assaulted detachments of Cheatham's Division at the Saxon house near the County Line.
