Peace Park
History
1
Peace Park, also known as McAlester Arboretum, occupies one of the oldest undeveloped areas on the University of Missouri’s main campus in Columbia, near Francis Quadrangle and downtown. Originally called McAlester Park after nearby McAlester Hall, it gained its present name during the Vietnam War era, when it became a gathering place for peaceful anti-war rallies in 1967, 1969, and on May 4, 1971. After that march, students formally renamed it and created a rock peace symbol memorializing the Kent State victims. Today the park remains both an arboretum with more than 100 trees and a shared campus green shaped by activism, memory, and landscape.
