Located in Princess Anne, Somerset County, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore has a rich African-American history. This historically black, land-granted doctoral degree granting institution was founded on September 13, 1886 as the Delaware Conference Academy by the Delaware Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It opened with nine students and one professor in the Olney building, and by the end of that year had added twenty-eight students. It operated under different names until 1970, when it became the University of Maryland Eastern Shore as part of the University of Maryland System. The 766-acre campus was twice ranked the second most beautiful campus in the U.S. by the National Professional Grounds Management Society. By 2005, more than 3,500 students from the U.S. and seventy-three countries worldwide were enrolled, and forty-six undergraduate and graduate degree programs were offered within the Schools of the Arts and Professions, Agricultural and Natural Sciences, Business and Technology, the Health Professions, and Graduate Studies.
