Weddle Bridge, a one hundred twenty-foot wooden covered bridge now spanning Ames Creek in Sweet Home, Oregon, originally crossed Thomas Creek near Scio as a rural road bridge within the valley’s covered-bridge tradition. Named for a nearby farmer and also known as the Devaney Bridge, it used a Howe truss with segmented portal arches, large side openings, and white board-and-batten siding. Its importance lies largely in its preservation: after replacement by concrete in 1980 and a planned demolition in 1987, local activism, state support, grants, and donations saved, rebuilt, and later restored it. Today it remains both a historic structure and a community gathering place.
