Cascadia County Park in Oregon, near Sweet Home on the South Santiam River, brings together Native history, early travel routes, resort-era heritage, and forest scenery. Long before settlers arrived, Molalla and Kalapuya people came here to fish, hunt, and gather huckleberries, and nearby Cascadia Cave preserves an 8,000-year-old American Indian petroglyph site with the largest concentration of rock engravings in western Oregon. Settlers later cut a wagon bypass whose ruts still remain. In 1896, George Geisendorfer opened a mineral-springs resort here that grew into a hotel and recreation grounds before fire destroyed the hotel. Oregon acquired the property in 1940, and Linn County took ownership in 2022.
