Upper Sioux Agency, on the Minnesota River south of Granite Falls, began as the Upper Sioux or Yellow Medicine Agency, a federal center created under treaties with the Dakota people. Its campus included housing, warehouses, and a manual labor school, but it was destroyed during the Dakota War of 1862. The site also holds the grave of Chief Walking Iron Mazomani, killed at the Battle of Wood Lake that year, and it has long been both historically and spiritually significant, especially for the Upper Sioux Community. After decades as a state park and recognition on the National Register of Historic Places, the land was transferred back following longstanding efforts by the community.
