Bald Knob National Wildlife Refuge in White County, Arkansas, about two miles south of Bald Knob, was created in 1993 on former rice farmland purchased by the federal government. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, it combines agricultural fields, irrigation works, bottomland hardwood forest, sloughs, oxbow lakes, and reforested land along the Little Red River. This managed mix of farmland and wetland habitat makes it an important wintering ground for ducks and other migratory birds, especially northern pintails. It also supports bald eagles, shorebirds, wading birds, and mammals such as bobcat, river otter, and beaver, while drawing many visitors for birdwatching and regulated hunting.
