On April 1, 1864, Col. Christopher C. Andrews led 231 men of the 3rd Minnesota Infantry and 8th Missouri Cavalry to Woodruff Co. to disrupt recruiting by Confederate Gen. Dandridge McRae. After marching 12 miles north of Augusta and nearly capturing McRae, Andrews's force was attacked by 545 Confederate cavalrymen. Falling back to Fitzhugh's Woods, the U.S. troops withstood several charges before retreating to Augusta, while the Confederates, out of ammunition, could only watch. U.S. losses totaled 29, and McRae lost as many as 100 dead and wounded.
