East Providence and Ribeira Grande were linked through the East Providence - Ribeira Grande Sister Cities Committee, established in 1982. The committee received the Sister Cities International Award for Professional Assistance at the Sister Cities International Conference in Los Angeles, California, on July 19, 1986.
