Newberry National Volcanic Monument is a protected volcanic landscape in central Oregon, established in 1990 around Newberry Volcano and managed within Deschutes National Forest by the U.S. Forest Service. Its 54,822 acres include lakes, lava flows, caves, and other geologic features centered on Lava Butte, Lava River Cave, Lava Cast Forest, and Newberry Caldera. Notable sites include Oregon’s largest uncollapsed lava tube, a lava flow preserving ancient tree molds, Paulina Peak, two alpine lakes in the caldera, and the Big Obsidian Flow. The area also served in Apollo astronaut training from 1964 to 1966, linking recreation, science, and striking volcanic terrain.
