Native Americans occupied Texas for at least 13,000 years before the first settlers of Old World heritage arrived. In San Saba County, the nonperishable remains left behind at campsites and other activity areas typically include flint tools, flint chipping debris, and burned rock fragments that lined campfire pits and earth ovens. Other artifacts found at these sites include broken pieces of pottery and food remains consisting principally of bone and clam shell fragments. Examples of artifacts include Perdiz Arrow Point, Scallorn Arrow Point, Montell Dart Point, Castroville Dart Point, Pedernales Dart Point, scraper, perforator, knife, and pottery vessel.
