Construction of the Whitewater Canal began in 1836 on a one hundred one mile route with fifty-six locks. It opened from Lawrenceburg to Brookville in 1839 and was later extended to Laurel and Cincinnati in 1843, Connersville in 1845, Cambridge City in 1846, and Hagerstown in 1847.
