Whitewater Memorial State Park is one of Indiana’s largest state parks, spanning 23,000 acres in the eastern part of the state between Brookville and Liberty. Established as Indiana’s sixteenth state park, it was created to honor American soldiers who died in World Wars I and II, giving the landscape a memorial purpose as well as a recreational one. Its major features include Brookville Reservoir, a large artificial lake built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers in 1974, and smaller Whitewater Lake. The park offers hiking, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, wildlife watching, and nature preservation, while also hosting acts of public remembrance such as honoring Vietnam veterans in 2008.
