It declares that their lives were cut short in battle, that by death they reached earthly glory, and that their bravery, sincerity, honor, and integrity won them an immortality of love and reverence, closing with an appeal for angels to guard the sleeping heroes. The monument then records the names of Confederate dead from Clarke County, Georgia, and Athens, Georgia, along with additional names around the base, including men identified by ranks such as general, colonel, lieutenant colonel, major, captain, lieutenant, sergeant, corporal, adjutant, and soldiers listed by name.
