Military
General Ulysses S. Grant had his headquarters at City Point throughout the final nine months of the American Civil War, and President Abraham Lincoln visited City Point for two weeks from late March through early April of 1865. During the Siege of Petersburg, from June 1864 to April 1865, the supply base there enabled an average of 120,000 Union soldiers to continue efforts to wear down General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and gain control of Petersburg, Richmond's main supply base. The site was also Appomattox Plantation, home of the Eppes family, where the war affected the people who lived there, both free and enslaved.
